Writing and Digital Communication Assignments

Critical Communications: Research Paper

During my Critical Communications course, my classmates and I were tasked with writing a research paper that related to a current issue or concern in the communications realm. As a former Black journalist, I have always wondered if other Black journalists felt some of the same backlash and concerns that I have felt while working in the industry.

In completing this assignment, I researched some of the reasons behind Black journalists leaving the newsroom. In recent years, many Black journalists have taken a step back from their careers in the newsroom. Many of them I have found left and searched for other career paths due to racial injustices and daily struggles with their editors and colleagues.

Countless articles discuss the concern of the lack of minorities in the newsroom. In my research, I share several examples of these journalists daily struggles.

Digital Portfolio Design: Speaking Sample and Website Design

Though I am a media and journalism professional, I enjoy wedding coordinating and planning events as a hobby. In my Web Writing and Editing course at Agnes Scott, we were assigned to create a website in WordPress. I decided to create a website to showcase some of the events I have helped to plan.

In this video, I walk through the website and explain all of the content included. This video showcases my speaking skills as well as my ability to use and create a clean website with the WordPress software.

Digital Portfolio: Pitch Deck Proposal

As a hobby, I help to plan weddings and events. In my Digital Portfolio course at Agnes Scott, we were assigned to create a simple, yet clean pitch deck proposal to share our idea or services.

In my proposal, I present the idea of hiring a day of wedding coordinator to help plan their wedding. This specific project highlights my PowerPoint design and presentation skills.

Visual Thinking & Web Design: ‘Show Me A Story’

During my Visual Thinking & Web Design course, we were tasked with the assignment, ‘Show Me A Story.’ For this particular project, we had to illustrate our knowledge of creating a sequenced image, which we were taught to do while in the class. We learned how to create gif images using the Adobe Photoshop program.

However, we were given an additional opportunity to participate in the Campus Movie Festival (CMF), a traveling student film festival, for a graded assignment instead. Agnes Scott College participated in this festival for the first time during the fall 2019 semester.

During the film festival, the CMF team allowed students to borrow their filming equipment and students were prompted to create a film within one week. The festival allowed me to demonstrate my video editing and filming skills. In the end, I created two videos for the course and the festival. The film Blueberry won the Campus Movie Fest 2019-2020 Silver Tripod Award for Best Documentary at Agnes Scott’s CMF festival. The videos are below.

Developing Content for Social Media: Content Strategy and Proposal

In the Developing Content for Social Media course, I created a social media content strategy and content strategy proposal for the company Jordandené. To complete each of these projects, I researched the company’s mission and goals and created a social media strategy for targeted social media platforms based on the Jordandené brand.

The content strategy includes the type of content that should be included on social media for the brand, a description of the brand’s audience, and mock social media postings. Once I developed the content strategy, I created a content strategy proposal, which depicts my presentation abilities. The Jordandené content strategy and content proposal are listed below.

Technologies of Social Change: Research Paper

While taking the Technologies of Social Change course, we studied several social movements throughout history and analyzed their effectiveness in creating social change. After researching and group discussions over several weeks on social movements, we were asked to analyze a social movement of our choice, and write a social movement analysis paper. Our papers detailed performative aspects of the movements discourse. For my research paper, I analyzed the gender pay gap movement as it pertains to Black women in the workforce.

Journalism in the Digital Age: Feature Story

While in the Journalism in the Digital Age course, we were prompted to write a nonfiction feature story of our choice. In writing this story, we conducted interviews and gather information about an everyday event or situation. Initially, my feature story focused on the behind the scenes of running an optometry business as a Black, female optometrist. However, during the semester, the COVID-19 pandemic caused many challenges. Businesses and schools were shut down and we, much like many other students, were forced to find alternative ways to complete our feature stories. In the end, the feature story focused on how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Focus Family Eye Care, a small, black-owned, optometry business is in Locust Grove, Georgia.
